These 2-pound fruits have all the long-term storage ability of their full-sized cousins, but arise in a much more manageable package!
Little Dipper is very uniform, setting masses of lightbulb-shaped fruits of pale tan on vigorous, full-sized vines. The flesh within the rind is a rich, deep orange, very flavorful and moist, with a small seed cavity. And you can always expect big yields from this one!
This mini butternut is less than half the size of most others, yet boasts the fine texture and superb eating quality of the very finest names in the family. Just peel away the rind with a potato peeler, cut the fruit in half, and scoop out the seeds: it’s ready to be baked with a little butter, sugar, and salt! Or chop, puree, or grate for use in all kinds of dishes.
Winter squash has great storage ability. It is grown like summer squash (sown 1 inch deep after all danger of frost), but the seeds should be spaced 4 to 6 feet apart. Harvest it when the plants die back or just before frost. Cut and cure the fruit in a well-ventilated area, then store at 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Pkt is 20 seeds.
